Edinburgh in August: 5 After-Dark Activities You Can’t Miss

Edinburgh in August

In August, Edinburgh comes alive after dark. From the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to late-night dining, there are endless possibilities for an unforgettable evening. Here are five top things to experience after the sun sets on The Royal Mile:

Edinburgh Festival Fringe Shows

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, and it takes place every August in Edinburgh. With over 3,500 shows to choose from, there’s something for everyone at the Fringe.

Take it from us – many of our Tour Guides are professional actors and will be performing in this year’s festival! From comedy to theatre to music, you’re sure to find something that will entertain and surprise you.

Live Music and Pub Sessions

Edinburgh has a vibrant live music scene, and there are always great places to catch a show after dark. From traditional Scottish folk music to indie rock, you’re sure to find something you’ll enjoy. Stramash and The Mash House each boast diverse line-ups ranging from indie bands to rock, folk, electronic acts and more.

If you’re looking for a more casual experience, there are plenty of pubs that host open mic nights and jam sessions too. Visit renowned traditional pub, Sandy Bells, enjoy a folk and acoustic session at The Royal Oak, or slide into the Jazz Bar to listen to local and touring artists across various jazz genres.

Late-Night Dining

Edinburgh’s restaurants don’t close early, so you can enjoy a delicious meal even after the sun goes down. Whether you’re craving traditional Scottish cuisine or something more international, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. Visit The Witchery by The Castle for its opulent décor and romantic atmosphere, Makars Gourmet Mash Bar for delicious “tatties” with a curious twist, or Kyloe for gourmet steak. All are open until 11pm.

And if you’re looking for something truly unique, try one of Edinburgh’s many rooftop restaurants, where you can enjoy stunning views of the city while you eat. The Lookout by The Gardener’s Cottage and Chaophyraya Edinburgh are both excellent options.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a must-see event for anyone visiting Scotland in August. This world-famous show features a spectacular display of military music and precision marching, set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

The Tattoo features performers from all over the world, and each year the show has a different theme. In 2023, the theme is “Stories.” This year’s show will feature performances from military bands, pipe bands, dancers, and acrobats, all celebrating the power of the arts to unite people from all walks of life.

In our humble opinion, no visit to Edinburgh could be complete without journeying back in time at The Real Mary King’s Close. Our underground tour takes you through the narrow streets and alleyways of Edinburgh’s Old Town, where you’ll learn about the people who lived and worked there centuries ago.

Our tours are open from 9am until 10am every day during August.
