Shrouded in myths and mysteries, The Close and its warren of streets, homes, and passageways offer a truly unique 5-star visitor experience for all education groups. Unlock the secrets of Edinburgh’s only preserved 17th-century street, wander through a labyrinth of Old Town alleyways, avoid the cry of “Gardyloo!”, and discover the stories of the people who lived, worked, and died here.

Terms and conditions

Our capacity is 20 guests per tour. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, we require the following adult-to-child ratios for school group bookings:

  • For Children Aged 6 to 12:

    • A minimum of 1 adult for every 6 children (ratio 1:6) is required.
  • For Children Aged 13 to 15:

    • A minimum of 1 adult for every 10 children (ratio 1:10) is required.
  • For Students Aged 16 to 18:

    • A minimum of 1 adult per tour is required, regardless of group size.

The Real Mary King’s Close does not accept responsibility for the supervision or safety of any children or young people under the age of 16. All supervising adults must ensure that children and young people are appropriately supervised at all times during their visit.

One adult is admitted for free with every 10 children (during off-peak time). Free familiarisation visits are available for group organisers.

Plan your visit:

  • 1-hour-long experience of The Real Mary King’s Close led by a character guide (per tour).
  • Arrive at least 15-minutes before departure time.
  • Spend time in the Burgh Courtroom Gift Shop and Coffee House, the departure point for your tour.
  • Need somewhere to eat lunch? The meeting room space can be booked for up to 1 hour if available on the day of your tour for for £50.
