Your essential guide to the best things to do in Edinburgh this July

Long days, warm(ish) weather, and the kind of light that makes the city glow – July in Edinburgh is a month made for memory-making. Whether you’re here for the first time or know the Royal Mile like the back of your hand, the capital comes alive in summer with world-class festivals, alfresco feasts, and excursions to suit every kind of traveller.

Here’s our roundup of the very best things to do in Edinburgh this July – including a few surprises and hidden gems along the way.

Dance under the castle skies

📍 Edinburgh Castle Esplanade | 4–13 July
The iconic Esplanade transforms into a dramatic outdoor concert venue this month. Set against the brooding silhouette of Edinburgh Castle, these summer concerts bring big-name bands and international stars to the historic heart of the city. Pack a raincoat, wear comfy shoes (there’s a steep hill and cobbles to contend with), and prepare for a night to remember.

Let the music play: Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival

📍 Various venues | 11–20 July
From big brass bands and soulful singers to modern jazz fusion, this beloved summer festival offers over 100 gigs across the city. Don’t miss the free Mardi Gras and Carnival events for live music, dancing and vibrant energy spilling into the streets.

Tuck in at Edinburgh Food Festival

📍 George Square Gardens | 18-27 July
For flavour hunters and foodie families, the city’s biggest food festival is a must. With free entry, local chefs and street food from across the globe, this relaxed garden gathering is the perfect place to graze your way through lunch or dinner.

Shop and stroll through Edinburgh’s summer markets

The city’s weekly markets are bursting with local talent and seasonal goodies in July.

  • Castle Terrace Farmers Market (Saturdays) – for fresh produce and scenic views.
  • Grassmarket Market (Saturdays) – crafts, street food and people-watching.
  • Leith Market (Saturdays) – a haven of chutneys, bakes and handmade bits.
  • Stockbridge Market (Sundays) – small-batch eats and original art.
  • The Neighbourgood Market (until 27 July) – street food and summer vibes in Stockbridge.
  • Castle Street Fair (7–13 July) – indie makers, street eats and artisan goods.
  • West End Fair (from 28 July) – arts, crafts and a great café.
  • Edinburgh Flea Market (26 July) – a treasure trove of vintage finds.

Discover art that tells a story

Rain or shine, these exhibitions offer a cultural escape:

  • Doug Cocker: Threads at Dovecot Studios (until 19 July) – wooden sculpture with soul.
  • Disrupting the Narrative at The Writers’ Museum (until 23 August) – poetry meets protest.
  • Royal Portraits at The King’s Gallery (until 6 September) – a photographic century of monarchy.
  • Out of Chaos at City Art Centre (until 12 October) – post-war Scottish art at its boldest.
  • Andy Goldsworthy: Fifty Years at National Galleries (until 2 November) – nature turned into art.

Explore the city like never before

Edinburgh’s history isn’t just written in books — it’s hidden beneath your feet. And there’s no better way to uncover it than by stepping down into the past with us at The Real Mary King’s Close.

This July, we’re offering three unforgettable ways to explore the city from a whole new perspective:

🕵️‍♀️ True Crime Tours (Fridays and Saturdays)
Think you know Edinburgh’s dark side? Think again. Our True Crime Tours dig deep into real cases of crime and punishment from the capital’s past — from grim deeds to gritty justice. Step inside the stories of the people who lived, died and broke the law on these very streets. Not for the faint-hearted.

🏘 Standard Tours (Daily, every 15 minutes)
Our classic tour is a one-hour immersive journey into 17th-century Edinburgh. Led by one of our expert guides, you’ll wander through authentic underground streets, meet characters from the city’s past, and uncover the real lives of those who called Mary King’s Close home. History, drama and atmosphere guaranteed.

☕ Closes & Coffee Tour (Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at 9.15)
We’ve teamed up with our friends at The Lost Close to bring you the ultimate morning adventure. Begin your day with an exclusive underground tour that explores not one but two hidden closes, followed by a warm cup of artisan coffee and a chance to chat with your guide. A perfect blend of storytelling, discovery and local flavour.

Each of our tours is designed to engage, inform and intrigue — whether you’re a history lover, a curious local or just looking to experience Edinburgh from a new angle.

Good to know

☀️ Weather: Edinburgh in July rarely gets above 20°C, and the odd shower is never far off. Layers and waterproofs are your friends.
🕓 Daylight: Expect sunrise before 05.00 and sunset after 22.00 – plenty of time to pack it all in.
🧳 What to pack: Sturdy shoes, a light jacket, and sunscreen. Yes, really.
🛏 Where to stay: July is peak season, so book early if you can.

So there you have it – your ultimate guide to making the most of Edinburgh in July. Whether you’re catching a concert on the Esplanade, nibbling your way through George Square, or stepping back in time beneath the cobbles with us, one thing’s certain: summer in Scotland’s capital is nothing short of unforgettable.

See you on the Close.
