Step into the shadows, then end your evening with a taste of Scotland.

Make your October evening in Edinburgh even more memorable by combining our atmospheric Lantern Led Tour with dinner at Amber Restaurant, at The Scotch Whisky Experience.

Begin by descending beneath the Royal Mile, where the preserved streets of The Real Mary King’s Close take on a completely different atmosphere after dark. With only the warm glow of lantern light to guide you, follow one of our costumed storytellers through shadowy closes and discover the real stories of the people who lived, worked and died here centuries ago.

Then, once you emerge from Edinburgh’s hidden streets, your evening continues above ground. Take the short walk along the Royal Mile to Amber Restaurant, where you can settle in for dinner and enjoy Scottish flavours in the heart of the Old Town.

One evening. Two experiences. A wonderfully atmospheric way to spend an October night in Edinburgh.

About the Experience

Your evening begins with a 1-hour Lantern Led Tour beneath Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

In the 17th century, Edinburgh's towering tenements rose as high as 10 to 12 storeys. With buildings packed tightly together inside the city's Flodden Wall, very little natural light reached the narrow closes below. Lanterns were an essential part of everyday life, helping residents navigate the dark streets beneath the towering buildings.

Following one of our expert costumed storytellers, you'll explore preserved homes and closes while discovering the real lives and deaths of Edinburgh's former residents. Along the way, you'll encounter one particularly feared figure whose appearance alone was enough to strike terror into the hearts of the city's inhabitants.

With dimmed lights and flickering lantern light to guide the way, the Close feels very different after dark.

But your evening doesn’t end when you return to the Royal Mile.
